We all experience thousands of moments every day. Most moments are handled by our subconscious mind, using a set of rules, behaviors, and mental models we have created for ourselves. Because moments are handled subconsciously, we are unaware most of them occurred. Our actions are a default reaction to life’s events.
However, the subconscious is not perfect. It misinterprets some moments. It is programmed to default to standard answers and not to ponder the implications of moments. The rules our subconscious follows can be out-of-date or not granular enough to handle the nuances of distinct moments.
The book introduces a simple model for acting more thoughtfully on moments, PTI: Pause, Think, Be Intentional. Pause overrides reacting and enables us to engage our more comprehensive conscious mind. Think with the conscious mind uses reasoning to choose action. Be Intentional asks us to complete what we set out to do. By making a few more moments consciously managed, we make our life, and the life of others, better.
